Although born in the northern Netherlands, he moved to Bruges as a young man, and most of his work expresses the impassive, unmannered, microscopically realistic approach peculiar to south Netherlandish art in the time of Jan van Eyck. David was skilled at synthesizing the art of several important south Netherlandish predecessors, adapting, for instance, the compositions of van Eyck and the technique of Hugo van der Goes. Flemish painter (b. 1575, Antwerpen, d. 1632, Antwerpen). Flemish painter. He painted historical, religious and mythological subjects, often on a large scale, derived principally from antique sculpture and the art of Michelangelo and Raphael and, to a lesser degree, from certain contemporaries, including the Dutch late Mannerists and the Bolognese school. He was highly esteemed in Antwerp but suffered, then and subsequently, from the inevitable comparison with his contemporary and formidable rival Rubens
TROOST, Cornelis
Dutch painter (b. 1697, Amsterdam, d. 1750, Amsterdam). Dutch painter, draughtsman and printmaker. He was the most important Dutch artist of the 18th century; he received many commissions (the catalogue by Niemeijer contains 925 numbers). Although he generally looked back to the genre scenes of the Dutch 17th-century masters, his satirical paintings earned him the nickname 'the Dutch Hogarth' after his English contemporary.
